This one is one of my less popular works, and possibly one of the more controversial. So many people have a firm opinon about this topic, but I thought I would share my belief here, and also explain (briefly) as to why. Enjoy. Pro Life or Pro Choice By Matthew Mansfield Pro life or pro choice? What be your voice? In one hand you grant the ability to give The other you restrict the option to live Why should ye choose one side or the other? thou read this and so ‘life’ was the choice of thy mother Now think back to the plan of our design The plan proposed was one that would not confine The vote of the Father favored choice over life This is true for decisions of man cause us strife We then reason our Savior favors not life over choice This to bring judgment on each for their voice. Man has the ability to take life in his hands Because in the beginning we chose the course of our plans From the grace of our lord we were granted it then Now it is our turn to choose for all men Which would the Father us choose; Life over choice? If this is the decision, then no freedom but force Was this not the plan and the path of another? The design of Satan to restrict each mother If each woman gave life at the expense of her own Then what be her mission his or her own? If thou wilt remove options and dictate ones course Then no freedom has man, and the result is remorse We are free here to choose, free to govern salvation This gift is extended to each person and nation Now it is time, come forth, cast thy opinion We need not to those by default have dominion For if we vote to restrict, then that side do ye favor As for me, myself, I side with the Savior

Okay, not everything has to be a book, right? I have small things to share, and that is mostly because the younger your little one is, the less attention span they have. This poem is for the smallest of attention spans. Pete’s Feet By Matthew Mansfield Hello, my name’s Pete. I have two feet. Aren’t they so sweet The way they set there so neat? When I run my feet just can’t be beat! After playing all day I pull them out to check on each pinky Uh-oh, PE-EW, they both got all stinky!

Most of my poems are aimed at the curious minds. So many things we speak without considering where the words come from. In this poem, I explore why “common sense” is, and what it is; for, as we all know, much sense that’s out there today is not common. Common Sense By Matthew Mansfield Wit is a small thing, but rare in its tender Each that has it returns it with speed to the sender Asking not always does the question solve But instead stirs the mind new things to resolve In all of my travels many times I have heard The phrase “common sense”, oh please, how absurd! What to me is a small thing, still vexing at that Why in my exposure have I found out that common sense not to be sense that is common? Where withal shall one look to find a place that doth set On a hill, or under, its location not requisite The purpose to be that common sense is met I have looked in the south and found more than a great lack Now to the west there is more but still less than a full sack If to me one person possess the sense in question This is not satisfaction to its own definition For one to have sense makes the thing to be rare Therefore, the commonness of sense is not very aware The true meaning discovered of the phrase “common sense” Is one that bespeaks of logics lack of dispense Then to all should the phrase ‘common sense’ refer Of a reason that’s common which does sound logic defer So as in all things as there must opposites be I must not be strong enough to this thing see So if the sense that is logic is that thing common still Then I must of a sense have too little reason and will To remain in the standing of this saying that passes I must have lesser logic then the oft spreading masses Through all this it’s wit that allows me questions ask Why are things not more obvious rather than behind a mask? I believe our characters are tested this way When we ask with wit we are guided to say If not here than there I shall of myself speak common sense I have not for my brain is too weak

My children are still young, and with that youth comes a lack of understanding about how to act. There are many things we do in our culture, which seem to be a curious thing, but each thing we do not only has a history, but a purpose. This poem was a way for me to explain to my children the need for civility among our society of peoples. Civility By Matthew Mansfield Good day, kind sir, how do you do today? Well and good. Thank you. Have a good day. Exchanging kind words with a nod a smile Is this all I need to go the extra mile? No, there is more to being kind to others Ye must love thyself as thy sisters and brothers These things seem simple With a cute smile and a dimple What of the one in the crowd that finds an offense? What does the wrong doer say in defense? Should the victim accept a hurtful thing? Would not this peace to all parties bring? In most cases to that a yes would be correct but in some things reactions one must redirect So if not returning with a smile and a nod What manner of justice upon the one acting odd? Most offenses are easy, they require no fix Tis the thinking of both that started the mix Turn a cheek, or two, maybe even three or four Perhaps when you do wrong they’ll turn even more Sound judgment this seems, one wrongs, no worry, resolve it But what of offenses too great to dissolve it? Aw yes, thee exceptions; as there must always be For these there are systems, even courts, and a fee Almost always if both are sound in thought The thing of the matter is solved more often than not I had a son that four years today Had his life taken in a most tragic way What thoughts should I have of him that crept in and took it of my grief to a shelf set, or a fishing line hook it? In a body of persons regulations to make So that nobody inside should ever break I gave ten rules that should never be broken If each are followed then no grief should be spoken When one should step outside laws set forth The body has reason to be set off course The way of the body must never be changed To me it leads, not to be rearranged Cast out the wrong doers, send them back to me Then will I judge those with exceptions that be As for the body of people keep the protection of laws The consequence justice, but civility the cause

When dealing with children, or even teenagers, it’s difficult to express the importance of teamwork. Many times, our young people believe that they are the center of the universe, but in time and with a little bit of experience and wisdom, they can learn we each play a part in something greater than ourselves. A Tire I Am By Matthew Mansfield A tire I am, strong and fresh in my speed I am of myself the source of my own need No parts of this vehicle need I for strength To travel here and there across this highway’s length I am here, look all, and gather around What a ta-do I am. I’m black and I’m round Rolling and rolling, with a pop and a hiss What is this? My once firm ground hug has turned to a kiss Why does the road feel so close and so strong. This is not right, no, something is wrong. The side of the road, wait this is not where I belong I am not weak, I am always so strong. My bolts are loosened and with a quick jerk and a twirl In the trunk with the tools? I’m a bright shiny pearl! It’s dark now, this space is small and confining This stabbing pain in my heart, A nail seems to have breached my lining Repairs have restored me, I am better now more than worse I roll again, but not like at first The air in me is cool, not hot like before I am not the only one there is, look there are three more. I see how others make this drive a song The journey is better when you take friends along.
